The journey of the Directorate of Health began as the first Directorate of the Government of Bangladesh (Mujibnagar Government) on May 2, 1971 at the Office of the Expatriate Government at No. 8 Theater Road in Kolkata. The Department of Health has entered the pages of history by providing services to the freedom fighters who fought in the Great Freedom Struggle, providing health care in refugee camps as well as directly participating in the frontline. It was decided to observe May 2 as "Health and Welfare Day" from 2022 to keep the memory of this golden day alive and memorable. In continuation of that, "Health and Welfare Day" is being celebrated on May 2, 2023.
The day was celebrated with a discussion meeting and cake cutting in Narsingdi Civil Surgeon office under the chairmanship of Dr. Md Nurul Islam Sir, Civil Surgeon of Narsingdi district.
