Recent achievements, challenges and future plans


Major achievements in recent years (3 years):

In the past 3 years, the health sector has made great progress and significant achievements in improving the quality of public health services. Infant mortality rate (under 5 years) declined to 36 per thousand in 2016 from 41 in 2014. Coverage of the expanded immunization program increased to 88% from 86% in 2014. Maternal mortality has decreased to 176 live births per target now, compared to 194 in 2014. Increased public awareness through health education has helped control malaria, tuberculosis and HIV infections. Provision of modern machinery, equipment and materials required for providing quality healthcare, uninterrupted supply of free medicines is ensured. Recruitment and placement of nursing manpower.

● In July and August 2018, a total of 20 midwives were recruited, 4 each in each upazila health complex, and 19 midwives were recruited in Narsingdi on 01/06/2021.

● In 2021, a total of 25 posts of senior staff nurses have been created in the Upazila Health Complex and a total of 28 posts have been made. 46 posts have been created and posted in 100-bed District Hospital and Sadar Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic.


Problems and Challenges:

● Limited resources, lack of skilled human resources and managerial weaknesses

● Providing quality and equitable health services.

● Lack of professional excellence, enthusiasm, motivation and ethics in nursing profession of nursing officers

● One of the challenges of providing quality health care.

● Raising awareness among the public about the prevention of Covid-19 and motivating them to participate in the vaccine for Covid-19 is also one of the challenges.


Future Plans:

● Planning to involve local people in healthcare management.

● Planned to involve rural population in delivery by midwives.

● To improve the nutritional quality of the people, the rate of receiving vitamin A supplements will be increased to 100 percent.

● Public will be made aware about covid-19.

● The vaccination program for Covid-19 will be increased to 100.

● Participation in all natural disaster response.


Probable Major Achievements for FY 2022-23:

▪ Undertake training for SSNs and midwives to improve their skills.

▪ Expansion of patient medical services, expansion of services to the poor population is implemented.

▪ Taking necessary steps to prevent and control communicable and non-communicable diseases (health education).

▪ Reduction in neonatal and under-5 mortality per 1,000 live births (increase institutional deliveries).

▪ Strengthening maternal and child health care including reduction of maternal mortality rate per lakh live births.

▪ SSNs and midwives successfully participated in the covid-19 vaccination. .

▪ Provide orientation training to SSNs and midwives alike.
